It’s no secret that I’d rather dine in a healthy café than a fancy restaurant any day, knowing that I can enjoy a decadent chocolate treat or a generous meal without the side of guilt.

What’s more, there are so many healthy food eateries in Sydney, it’s not unusual for me to keep a ‘places to visit’ list to mark off as a mini weekend project when I can. It’s a great way to compare the types of creative dishes and desserts that can be made with nutrient-rich wholefoods.

When I first had the chance to visit the Paleo Café, Bondi Junction, I was a little underwhelmed. Given the cafe’s hype and the popularity of the Paleo diet, I expected a little bit of the rustic, homegrown garden feel of The Grounds of Alexandria, or its nearby healthy café, Earth to Table in Bondi. Functional orange and white plastic tables and chairs on one of Bondi Junction’s busiest roads was not what I had in mind.

But the food at the Paleo Cafe, however, is exactly what I’d expected. The menu sticks to Paleo principles, eliminating grains, sugar and diary (foods, which according to Paleo, our bodies are not designed to digest). So you can expect a good variety of dishes consisting of lean meat, seafood, eggs, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and berries.

It’s hard to find a place that just delivers simple, healthy and fresh home-style dishes. And that’s the beauty of this place, you could easily make most of the dishes here at home if you put in the effort. Easy meals such as pancakes, salads and veggie stacks are no-brainers, but it’s good knowing there are safe and familiar heathy options when eating out.

Having been here a few times now, I’d recommend any of their super-sized smoothies (the blueberry and banana, pictured above, is a favourite) as well as their satisfying salads, which contain so many different textures and flavours, like this poached chicken, fig and walnut one.

The service is incredibly fast and friendly and everything is reasonably priced. There’s also a range of raw food treats as well as Paleo books and various healthy food products.
